Lee Danisch — March of Mugs 2022
Lee Danisch started his pottery career in 1973, operating the Vinegar Hill Pottery near Sussex, New Brunswick. Then, as now, he made stoneware and porcelain fired in a large oil-fired kiln built for the purpose. Near the end of the firing, salt is thrown in the kiln to produce unique glaze and surface effects. By 1984 he re-fired his engineering career to support a growing family, and only recently returned to clay after retiring and moving to Fogo Island. On Fogo Island, he and his partner Fraser built another salt kiln and studio, and now operate Fogo Island Saltfire Pottery. Each piece is affected in a unique way by the potter’s hands, and the actions of white-hot flames and salt vapours.
