This party plate measures about 17 centimetres or 6.5 inches across.
Beach sand from Tilting, Fogo Island, Newfoundland was swirled into the porcelain clay as it was thrown on the wheel. The sand is visible behind the turquoise crystalline glaze and also visible in the clear glaze on the rim.
I’ve always seen water and ice in this crystalline glaze so adding beach sand just seems to fit with the icy shores of Newfoundland.
This particular plate was glaze-fired a second time which led to the more frosty looking crystals.
Party Plates started as a warm-up exercise. Whenever I have a day at the wheel, I start by making six small plates - but repetition has never been my strong suit and these bread and butter plates evolved! With a variety of surfaces and textures - often involving beach sand, I think these plates are fun and ideal for entertaining.
Whether your party involves birthday cake or drinks with canapés, your guests will enjoy choosing their favourite plate from your collection.
